The Meadowsweet is a very popular wild flower grown in damp meadows and along the edges of ponds and river banks in Europe and Asia, as well as throughout North America’s eastern coast. Growing to heights of up to five feet, it has fernlike foliage, and tufts of soft, fluffy, creamy-white flowers clustered close together, which possess a strong, sweet fragrance.

In the 1830s, salicylic acid — the ingredient from which aspirin is created — was first isolated from the flowering part of Meadowsweet. Unlike aspirin, however, Meadowsweet is soothing to the stomach and was traditionally used to heal gastrointestinal discomfort and heartburn. In colonial times, Meadowsweet was used as an anti-inflammatory to reduce the symptoms of arthritis and rheumatism. Meadowsweet belongs to the rose family, and was Queen Elizabeth I’s favorite strewing herb. It outranked all other strewing herbs because its aromatic leaves didn’t cause headaches, unlike many other strongly scented leaves. Meadowsweet’s popularity as a strewing herb at weddings earned it its alternate name, Bridewort

Meadowsweet has astringent, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, and has been known as a soothing and healing herb for infections of the eye. It may be useful in healing the digestive tract, and particularly helpful for diarrhea, as well as gastric ulcers, due to the herb’s antacid effect. It might also help eliminate excess gas and fluid retention, and is said to help control bladder and kidney issues.

Since it has anti-arthritic properties, arthritic pets could benefit from its use.

As an analgesic, Meadowsweet may alleviate general pain and discomfort, as well as pain due to joint problems. It is also known as a fever reducer.

Should not be used for cats.
